Finding a good foundation mare is at least as hard as finding the right stallion. It took me quite a while til I found the right “lady” for my stud:
Glanvyrnwy Surprise was 5 years old, in foal, raw, but had indispensable confidence in people. Christof Troß had her brought from wales as a yearling and gave this little wildling this immense trust through his affectionate upbringing.
Surprise has matured into an important brood mare in the last few years and her superb offspring makes her a real asset to our stud.

She was also shown successful, is a show professional and knows absolutely what shows are about. We were successful twice at the Verbandsstutenschau of the Pferdestammbuch Schl.Holst./HH, first as the overall champion mare and then also by becoming the champion family together with her daughters Splendid and Samantha, and that even though we had strong opponents.

Merit Splendid, the first daughter by Charles and out of Surprise left the Elitestutenschau of the Pferdestammbuch Schleswig-Holstein/ Hamburg in 2000 as a supreme champion. A great victory that her sister Merit Samantha repeated in 2002. Splendid successfully completed the mare performance test at Lürschau, where she got a 9 in showjumping just like her sire. That showjumping is natural to Charles’ and Surprise’ offspring has been demonstrated also by Merit Starry Night in 2003, when she even got a 10. Since 2002 Splendid has given birth to good foals year after year and has proven her quality in every aspect. She has a firm place within our herd of broodmares.
Unlimited confidence in people, tranquility and prudent handling of her foals as well as absolute sovereignty within the herd distinguish this mare from others. Giving birth was never a big deal and also long journeys to stallions far away were never a problem. Also reintegration into the herd after the covering gave any reason for concern. She lets Charly know from the start that she is not interested in him and that all she wants is a little bit of grooming every now and then.
Does he ever wonder why his daughter has a foal at foot every year?

In winter 2002 the two year old filly Penycrug Caitlin arrives. She left her welsh homeland via the Royal Welsh Sale in autumn 2001 and comes to us through an importer.
What a fortune!

At the registration of mares of the Pferdestammbuch in June 2003 she is on her best behaviour, gets invited to the Elitestutenschau and becomes the Welsh Cob champion in Padenstedt.

September 2005
The last show of the year is the Verbandsstutenschau des Pferdestammbuchs Schleswig-Holstein/Hamburg held at theNORLA in Rendsburg.
A very interested audience, a great atmosphere and Caitlin in brilliant condition, asking me politely during the lap of honor: “ Are you okay, can we go on or do you need me to wait for you?”
